Test-ED 2012 - Pleasant experience!

Test-ED 2012 - Pleasant experience!

First of all i was very happy that i had worth and more value than what i paid for in getting to the Test-ED 2012... More over i am very proud that i could able to bring 2 friends of mine who were in also intrested in attending this grand event for testers by the testers... Kudoos ragav!!!!

Now to the experience of the ride....

It was 2:30AM 5th Dec 2012 Wednesday, my alarm rang when i was in the train sleeping dead tired ;-) Snoozed three times by when i reached KR Puram (Bengaluru).. it was 4:00 AM about 2yrs since i have been to B'lore.... I and my friend from chennai, some managed to get a couple of cab and reached my other friend's room who was also join us for Test - ED... We took an auto and reached the MLR convention centre..  We were on time...

With a welcome hug from Pradeep (My thala), Entering into the auditorium with a great ambiance was giving me a great thrill with the BG music... I was excited about that i am going to go through renowned speakers...

To start with James talk on the rising of thinking indian tester, WoW what a start... I felt very ignorant of not knowing the fact that history of india has lot of things that can be referred to testing... I was very proud when person like James referred thirukural ( I love thirukural )... Especially the one below

638. 'Tis duty of the man in place aloud to say
The very truth, though unwise king may cast his words away.

In Tamil:
அறிகொன்று அறியான் எனினும் உறுதி
உழையிருந்தான் கூறல் கடன்.
Meaning:
Although the king be utterly ignorant, it is the duty of the minister to give (him) sound advice.

Oh man, Now i realize that there are lot of things in thirukural (Also in indian history) to testing.. This talk really made me to feel proud that i am not just a tester I am in Indian Tester... Jai hindh!

Then followed with Rahul... This was first time am hearing him.. I liked his way of approach towards testing and the message that he conveyed was a good take away...

Thanks for the organizers for a good lunch and the dessert.. I was doubting how could a meet like this with Lunch can be this much economical... :-) Thanks Moolya..

Brainuiz... Post lunch... Was a good idea to keep the people engaged.. I was actually asking me a question myself Do i know testing? Actually i was not, atleast based on the answer that i could find out.. I think every tester has to ask him self frequently how experieced he is inorder to keep him updated in this field..

Next ride was my thala (Pradeep) A complex title.. and a very different way of presentation with Background music (It was like watching a movie)..Yet again clean neat execution from my thala... That's my thala's Kungfu panda style... I was inspired

Following by Justin short and sweetest show.. Even though the session was quite short i had a lot of take away's from his speech... Man! what a lot of information and knowledge he has.. I would for sure improvise my way of test design in furture using the pair wise testing...

Thanks to manoj it was great to have a developer in a testing conference.. even though the session was a bit dry for me (May be its development concepts which i might lack knowledge) but the information was a good take away.. Continuous deployment...

And the final session.. I apology that i could not recogonize name of him (@ Moolya can you help me out here plz),  He was just great… The way he spoke abt mahabharath with gaurav and pandava’s with software testing.. what a way to relate the tradition with software testing.. I just admired his way of presenting..

It was great to see all in one stage during questions session.. This was just great…
On total Test-ED-2012 was just awesome start.. Hope to be part of Test-Ed 2013…. Thanks  to Organizers and speakers and all the testers who participated….

On top of this experience I could be around with some of my old pals in Blore.. who I have met 2-3 years back… We had a good meet up and dine.. (This was a bonus which I got) :-)
What a way to end year 2012…. Great !!!

Thupakii Testing Style / Approach may be a value addition to Scripted Testing Approach...

Thupakii Testing Style / Approach may be a value addition to Scripted Testing Approach...

I have been to a movie called Thupaaki good movie, There was pre-interval scene where Vijay Hero and his 11 associates close in on 12 sleeper cell terrorists. Those who have watched it can easily relate the what i am talking about the approach of Thupaaki testing... :-)

I say it was a good movie, b'cos during this particular scene, It just rang a bell in my mind, why can't the same approach can be followed in Software scripted testing approach. It will add a good value addition to the scripted testing approach and that too with a team...

Here it is, this is how the scene goes

Vijay (Indian army Intelligence officer) could manage to get hold of one terrorist (Bug), from him he could get a lead that there is 12 (Problem due to the 12 Bug) bomb blast planned around the city (Software) at the same time, but no clue who is the remaining 11 members (Bug), but has a clue where the 12 places are (Different modules of the software), so what he does is, He and his team of 11 associates Military officials (Software Testers) play a game by, letting one terrorist (Bug) which he got hold of to escape and who was suppose to pass on the information to others and from there the communication splits to the 12 terrorist to proceed with their own planned operation.....

Vijay and 11 associates were wired through mobile, follow the guy who escaped closely without his knowledge, and decided to split themselves each from there on to whom ever the terrorist communicated.. finally all the 12 associates including vijay were following individually 12 other people who where in the 12 different places where the bomb was suppose to be placed as per the clue... Then each associates were having a pistol with them and knock the 12 terrorist down.

Those who watched the movie can recollect the scene quickly,

Now... Why the same approach cant be done in Software testing while executing through the scripted testing. During the middle of the execution cycle (May be for a day or two, hour or two).. When you realize the script is limiting you from going further.... when you spot a trace of bigger issue/area where the scripted test has limitation due to various factor(Time, Cost, Skill etc)....

By this time you should be familiar with the system....

So take the lead of the trace.. Make a team at least 2 min up-to maximum (How many bugs that could possibly arise due to this trace) entire team should be aware of common goal and skilled enough.. Execute the same script and recreate a space... From where the limitation of scripts start explore the trace with the team, when ever you spot the instance of issue make one team member to work on from there individually on that particular instance and prepare a detail report on that, and rest of the team to proceed with the original trace for more until all the team member has individual instance for them to look on... Repeat the same exercise until

A) Deadline of this thuppaki testing approach May be for day or two/ Hour or two
B) You have enough traces or instances identified
C) You reach the scope of the project or product based on the given context
D) You see that you are misleading from the original trace or the area of the issue
E) Enough evidence to Prove / Justify that the trace of the instance to the real issue

One main precondition is spot of the trace if bigger issue / area should be valid and justifiable limitation of the scripted (Hope both of this should be easily provided)

Thanks to AR Murugadoss for having filming this, which also triggered my blogging after a long time... I hope to films could have lot more software testing in it... :-)
